AMD Raises the Gold Bar

Austin’s Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a good corporate neighbor with high standards for business development, community relationships and environmental policy.  The company’s Lone Star Campus in Texas, designed by TBG Partners LEED Architects is a reflection of the chipmaker’s environmental commitment to excellence.  In January, the company announced that the campus has received a Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Certification from the third-party rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.AMD’s determination to environmental excellence typifies the chip giant’s commitment to responsible community conduct.  AMD supports many educational programs around the Austin area including the Reading is Fundamental Program and the Del Valle Independent School District.  AMD is also closely linked to the Austin Symphony Orchestra so it is no surprise that the company has set a forward-thinking, environmentally-friendly green policy in place. The Austin facility is not the company’s only LEED® gold operation.  At AMD, the green commitment is global.  AMD’s facility in Suzhou, China, has also accomplished a gold rating.  In 2008, the Suzhou facility was recognized by the Suzhou Industrial Park Environmental Protection Bureau as an Environmentally Friendly Enterprise. In Austin, the Lone Star campus is powered by Austin’s Energy’s Green Choice electricity, which is derived from clean, renewable energy sources like wind power.  The campus was designed with a rainwater collection capacity of 1.2 million gallons.  The water is then used in the cooling towers of the buildings and in the campus irrigation system.During the construction of the campus, 20% of the building materials were recycled and another 20% were locally sourced.  100% of the landscaping plan calls for the use of native plantings and products.AMD’s commitment reflects a trend in corporate America.  In a recent survey, 82% of large American corporations will be greening 16% of their real estate holdings and 18% of these corporations will be greening more than 60% of their real estate portfolios.  The results of this report show a positive trend toward and the wide acceptance of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® rating system.  AMD and America are going green!  How about your business?
