Are You Really Living?

According to a Zen master, one should “do the dishes to do the dishes, not do the dishes to clean the dishes.” When you walk down the street, it’s easy to focus on where you’re headed and what you’re going to do when you get there. By doing this, however, the moment you are actually living in is cheapened and less appreciated, although it might be just as important or magical as the moment you might be looking forward to. With just a little effort– mostly to restrain your mind from dashing ahead to another event or lagging behind looking to the past – you can start to appreciate living in this moment, rather than waiting for or thinking back to something different.
