Office Depot is going green. The office supply chain plans to open its first green store in Austin this summer. The green Austin store is the first in a series of stores that have been certified through the new LEED® Volume Certification Program. They plan to implement this design in several of their new buildings.
The building earned LEED® certification for its environmentally friendly design. Inside the 21,000 square foot Austin building is an array of energy efficient lighting, including solar tracking skylights and solar panels. Offices and bathrooms are fitted with light sensors. The floors are made of 60 percent recycled materials. The outside of the building has a reflective white roof and non-asphalt, concrete parking lot.
A high efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit rounds out the buildings energy efficient design. Office Depot will also operate a recycling program in the building for corrugated cardboard, paper, plastics, and printer cartridges.
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program is designed to encourage environmentally sustainable buildings. Austin encourages businesses to use green building practices in new constructions.
