5 Steps to Turn Your Existing Building Green – Beginning LEED® EB

LEED-EB is the industry name for LEED® certification for Existing Buildings.  If you’re a business owner of an existing building and interested green building or LEED®  certification, you don’t want to start by just replacing building systems you think need to be replaced.  There are steps to be followed, information to glean and rules to learn.

  1. Step 1 – Research. Obviously, you’ll want to know what LEED® EB certification involves.  The Green Building Council website will give you more information about LEED® EB, as well as case studies to download and read, FAQs and a review of the rating system.
  2. Step 2 – Read the LEED®  EB checklist .The LEED® EB checklist is a comprehensive listing of point possibilities.  Once you look it over, you’ll need to decide what level of certification you want to reach: Platinum, Gold, Silver or Basic Certification
  3. Step 3 – Join the U.S. Green Building Council. By joining the Green Building Council, you’ll be eligible for discounts on project registration, certification, workshops, accreditation and resource materials.  In addition, this will help your business be recognized as a leader in supporting green building.
  4. Step 4 – Attend Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. Greenbuild, the premier conference for green building, is sponsored by the Green Building Council.  The yearly conference is a great place for networking, as well as finding out the latest in green building design and all things related – operations and maintenance, financing, construction, etc.
  5. Step 5 – Know your local chapter. By getting involved with the local chapter of the GBC, you’ll be able to network with people in your region with experience in LEED®  – EB.  This is especially helpful if you have questions or concerns about implementing any of the areas specified in the certification process.

By following these five steps before starting your green building project, you’ll already be ahead of the game, and well on your way to LEED® EB certification.
