In Glen Allsop’s article “8 Truths that Will Improve Your Life”, he discusses eight harsh truths that he has learned from life. Although life has its ups and downs, how we deal with them can sometimes make all the difference. The sixth truth, “Rain Will Sometimes Cancel Play” is of particular interest. On some occasions when you have your shorts on and you’re ready for the beach, it’s going to rain. Or, when you get to that first hole and you’re ready to tee off – the clouds will open. In my case, it was the cable television going out for Monday Night Football, or the tree falling on my brand new car prior to a weekend vacation. Despite the fact that these situations can be frustrating, we cannot control the weather and rain will sometimes cancel play. So what can you do about it? I’ve learned that things aren’t always going to go your way, and it is important to not stress about the things in life that you cannot control. Rather than getting angry the next time your flight home for Thanksgiving is canceled due to snow, try relaxing: you cannot control the variables in the situations. Getting worked up over the situation will not resolve it, so why even bother getting stressed? If you want to improve your life, you need to learn to live with things that happen. Although it is impossible to change the past, you can change your reactions to events that happen in life. This tactic has worked for me, and I encourage you to give it a try.
